Data Scope Modeling

An activity that includes producing a Very High Level Data Model that graphically represents the data scope of a project, of a system or of the enterprise, and generating reports from the data model. This model shows only Forms (or Logical Views, if the Form is not available as a model object), Entities and Relationships that are within the stated scope. The model doesn’t show attributes. To make the scope clearer, the Data Scope Model (DSM) may contain Forms, Entities and Relationships that are clearly indicated by color or placement to be out of scope.

The data scope may further divided: into phases for a project, into subsystems for a system, and into business areas for an enterprise DSM (EDSM). Project data scope models and derived reports should be included with project proposals and project planning deliverables. Forms, entities and relationships may be color coded to differentiate model objects that are new from those that are already implemented but are being modified.

This is a modeling activity that TDM introduces at the beginning of the end-to-end data modeling process.
